What Is Rugged Edge Computing?

From a distance, rugged edge computing seems like a new-age innovation. In reality, it isn’t. Instead, it’s the next generation of computing technologies that combines state of the art hardware with software that can be applied in various fields. RGC is the latest addition to the family of intelligent systems. The first was IBM’s System on Chip (SoC), which became popularized in the personal computer market.

The rugged edge computer ups the ante for smarter, faster, better systems that can take on new physical and/or environmental challenges. They need to have systems that can tolerate extreme weather conditions (which often appear regularly in the business world), ruggedized networking that can withstand heavy-duty networking environments, and the ability to communicate without relying on expensive infrastructures. Such systems require an environment in which data connectivity is robust, consistent, and can be rapidly obtained and used – even during the deployment of patch-level security enhancements to the network or software.

Such requirements drove the original purpose-built systems from dedicated military networks to commercial cloud infrastructures. They required extremely reliable and scalable hardware, highly-efficient processors, reliable networking and real-time processing. Such systems had to be highly resilient, especially to harsh environments. All of these factors are part of the current focus of Rugged Edge computing.
